Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe publicly dismissed a suggestion from the world’s richest man for the province to separate.
Moe’s reply stems from a series of posts made on X, where Elon Musk encouraged Quebec, Alberta and Saskatchewan to separate from Canada.
Musk, trillionaire owner of SpaceX, Tesla and X.com (formerly known as Twitter), reacted positively to news of Quebec premier-elect Paul St-Pierre Plamondon stating that his dream of Quebec independence “will be realized one day.”
“Good. Quebec should separate,” Musk wrote Wednesday morning.
“They would be better off. Alberta and Saskatchewan should separate too.”
On Wednesday afternoon, Saskatchewan’s premier quote-replied to the post, stating simply: “No.”
Although Moe has previously spoken against the idea of Saskatchewan separating from Canada, he has defended Alberta Premier Danielle Smith’s right to include the question of separation in Alberta’s upcoming referendums.
Speaking to media in May, the premier also stated Saskatchewan had similar plebiscite and citizen-initiated referendum legislation as Alberta.
“... so if that was met in Saskatchewan, we’re a government that would follow the law in that space,” he told reporters.
