The Ontario Provincial Police is investigating an animal cruelty complaint after a dog was shot and later died from its injuries in Thessalon First Nation.
Police responded to a complaint about animal cruelty at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 6 on Sago Street in the community.
“The investigation determined that the dog had been let outside its residence at approximately 7 a.m. earlier that morning,” the OPP said in a news release Oct. 8.
“When the animal did not return home, the owner began searching for it. A short time later, the dog, described as a German Shepherd-Husky mix, was located severely injured and unable to move in a yard near its home.”
The injured dog was immediately taken to a veterinary clinic in Desbarats for emergency treatment.
“Despite the efforts of veterinary staff, the dog later succumbed to its injuries,” police said.
“The investigation has determined that the injuries were consistent with the dog having been shot.”
