A man is facing charges after he allegedly tried to suffocate an elderly man in western Prince Edward Island.
Officers responded to a disturbance at a home in Cape Wolfe around 3:20 a.m. Thursday.
Police say a 65-year-old man used a pillow to try to suffocate a man in his 80s.
Another person in the home heard a commotion and intervened, according to an RCMP news release.
Police say the victim and the accused are known to each other.
David Alfred Howard was arrested and remanded into custody.
He was set to appear in Summerside provincial court again on Friday morning to answer to a single charge of attempted murder.
Police say the incident could have had tragic consequences.
“The victim was fortunate that another person in the home heard the disturbance and intervened when they did. Their actions likely prevented a much more devastating outcome,” says PEI RCMP chief superintendent Kevin Lewis.
“Incidents involving violence against vulnerable individuals are deeply concerning, and allegations of this nature are investigated thoroughly. We are grateful for the quick actions of the individual who intervened.”
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
