The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over the investigation of a case after someone allegedly got seriously injured during a well-being check.

The SIU says the OPP responded to a call on Friday afternoon at a home on West Street North at roughly 1 p.m. to check the well-being of a 65-year-old man.

According to the SIU, the man had barricaded himself in the home and when officers tried to apprehend the man, one of the officers deployed a less-lethal weapon - a tool used to stop a threat using blunt force.

The OPP says both the man and the officer became injured during the interaction and were sent to the local hospital for a medical assessment.

According to he SIU, the man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

The SIU tells CTV News the man’s injury was serious but non-life-threatening.

The officer has been released from the hospital.

The SIU is called in when there is a police interaction which results in serious injuries, death, allegations of sexual assault or the discharge of a firearm.
