FREDERICTON - Officials from the United States and Canada are to meet today to discuss the suspension of exports of Prince Edward Island potatoes south of the border.
Canada last month banned shipments of P.E.I. potatoes to the U.S. after the discovery in October of a fungus called potato wart in two fields in the province.
Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau has said that if Canada didn't suspend the exports voluntarily, the U.S. would have imposed its own order.
Greg Donald of the PEI Potato Board says his members are losing millions of dollars because of the export ban.
He says Island farmers appreciate the support and encouragement they are receiving locally and from across the country.
The United States potato market is worth about $120 million a year to P.E.I.
