Motorists should expect delays on certain routes in Toronto as the Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival grand parade takes over a stretch of Lake Shore Boulevard on the weekend.

Starting Saturday at 1 a.m., Lake Shore Boulevard will be closed in both directions between Strachan Avenue and Colborne Lodge Drive.

The road is scheduled to reopen Sunday at 6 a.m.

The parade will assemble at the CNE grounds, where it will exit onto Ontario Drive to Lake Shore Boulevard and continue westbound to Parkside Drive, where it will come to an end.

Police are urging people to take the TTC and GO Transit, which have expanded service during the event.

Because the festival draws hundreds of thousands of people, there will be an increase in traffic in the downtown area, so motorists should plan to take an alternate route to avoid delays, police said.

Stopping is not allowed on the Gardiner Expressway, except for emergencies.

Meanwhile, Toronto EMS is offering advice to help people to stay cool and avoid falling ill during the event.

Most years, paramedics treat about 100 people suffering from medical conditions related to sun and heat exposure.

Saturday’s high is expected to reach 33 C.

Parade attendees should drink water to stay hydrated, put on sunscreen, wear hats and comfortable walking shows, and bring food and any prescribed medication with them, Toronto EMS said.

People who require medical attention should call 911 for help. Light standards along the parade route are marked with identification numbers to help people to identify their location, Toronto EMS said.
