New details are coming out about a high-risk takedown in North York Wednesday that ended with five suspects being arrested and charged.

York Regional Police say one of the suspects was arrested inside Sheridan Mall, a popular shopping centre located at Jane Street and Wilson Avenue.  Another suspect was located later in the afternoon in a garbage chute in a nearby apartment complex on Dallner Road.

The two men are believed to have been inside a vehicle that officers chased from Vaughan into Toronto, culminating in the takedown outside the mall.  Those two suspects managed to elude police while officers arrested three other suspects on the spot.

CP24 news helicopter was at the scene at the moment of the takedown and captured images of one of the suspects running into the mall. Police at the time said they believed he was armed and that he was the only suspect on the loose.

The drama unfolded at around 11 a.m. in Maple after four men – two of whom were carrying handguns -- forced their way into a home on Solway Avenue, located in the area of Keele Street and Major Mackenzie Drive.

A man inside the home was assaulted, bound and forced into the back of a silver, four-door sedan that was being driven by a fifth suspect. Police who were called to the scene spotted the suspect’s vehicle and immediately gave chase.

The pursuit ended at Jane and Wilson, in front of Sheridan Mall. Dozens of police cars and scores of onlookers were at the scene to witness the takedown as officers freed the victim and arrested the suspects.

The victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated in hospital.

Police confirmed Thursday that one of the five men arrested is a 17-year-old minor who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The other suspects have been identified as 24-year-old Raymond Saah of Brampton, 21-year-old Derrick Osei of no fixed address, 21-year-old Davonie Senior of Toronto, and 24-year-old Tervil Brown of Toronto.

The suspects remain in custody and were expected to appear in a Newmarket courtroom today.

The charges they face include:

  • robbery with a firearm
  • kidnapping using a firearm
  • forcible confinement
  • using a firearm while committing an indictable offence
  • disguise with intent
  • assault with a weapon
  • escape lawful custody
  • mischief under $5,000
