A woman was airlifted to a Toronto hospital after an odd crash in Niagara Falls on Wednesday morning.

The crash sequence began when a dump truck's raised box struck an overpass in the QEW's Fort Erie-bound lanes, at Lundy's Lane, shortly before 9:50 a.m., said Const. Graham Williamson, an Ontario Provincial Police spokesman.

The box came to rest against the overpass, which sustained significant damage, and was struck by a minivan, which was driven by the woman, Williamson said.

Williamson said the woman suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital by ground ambulance before she was airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto.

A third vehicle struck debris on the road. No other injuries were reported.

Due to a police investigation at the scene, the Fort Erie-bound QEW is closed at Thorold Stone Road, in addition to a stretch of Lundy's Lane. The QEW closure is expected to last until about 5 p.m.

Second crash occurs

As police were investigating that crash, a second major collision occurred at the QEW and Thorold Stone Road.

An Ornge air ambulance was called to the scene of that crash, which involved two tractor-trailers.

One of the drivers was airlifted to hospital.
