Founding members of April Wine reunite for new song

Published:

Three former April Wine members have reunited for a new project.

More than 50 years after helping form one of Canada’s most iconic rock bands, three Nova Scotia family members are making music together again.

Jim Henman and his cousins David and Richie Henman were among the founding members of April Wine, the Halifax-born rock group that went on to international success. Although the trio remained close, they hadn’t recorded together since the early 1970s.

They’ve reunited under the name Henman, Henman & Henman, and have released their first track together in more than five decades.

The song, “She’s So Cool,” is a 25-year-old tune rediscovered by Jim Henman and reimagined with Halifax producer Josh Kelly.

“It started with Jim co-writing the song,” Ritchie said in an interview with CTV Atlantic’s Katie Kelly. “Suddenly he decided he wanted David and I on it, and it was as simple as that.”

David said hearing the track for the first time stopped him in his tracks. “When Jim sent me that song, I was floored. It’s just such a cool tune.”

The trio recorded their parts in Halifax, Toronto and Montreal.

“You’re going to hear some really nice guitar, a good beat, some harmony and a good vibe,” said Jim.

Dec. 3 marked two years since the passing of Myles Goodwyn, April Wine’s fourth original member, who remained tied to the band until his death. The Henmans say they would have asked Goodwyn to be part of the project.

At 76, 77 and 78 years old, the cousins say returning to the studio together has been energizing.

“We are feeling like teenagers,” said Jim. “It’s fun, and we feel young again. That’s what music can do.”

“She’s So Cool” is out now, and the cousins say this reunion is only the beginning of their next chapter.
