A preview of what to expect at this year’s Oscars

Tyrone Edward shares insights on the Kpop Demon Hunters and Sinners musical numbers expected at this year's Oscars.

The 98th Academy Awards will take place in Los Angeles on Sunday, although things may be done a little differently on Hollywood’s biggest night.

CTV Etalk’s Tyrone Edwards told CTV Your Morning on Friday that one notable change at this year’s edition of the Oscars will be that only two of the five songs nominated for best original song will be featured in a live performance: “Golden” from “KPop Demon Hunters” and “I Lied to You” from “Sinners”.

Usually, all songs that are nominated in the category are performed during the ceremony. Edwards says the reason for the change is because the two songs made history.

“Golden” was the first K-pop song to win a Grammy Award, while “Sinners,” which used music as its own character in the film, is the most nominated film in Oscar history, with 16 total.

“When you look at those two and the amount of genres of music that it crosses, it does give you a global delivery for any type of appetite,” he said.

Canadian representation

Canada will have some impressive representation at the awards this year.

The Canadian teams behind the look of “Frankenstein” were nominated for makeup and hairstyling -- Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey.

The production design team on the film also received a nomination, including production designer Tamara Deverell and set decorator Shane Vieau.

Also nominated is Montreal’s Alison McAlpine, who is up for best documentary short with “Perfectly a Strangeness.”

Hudson Williams from the smash hit TV show “Heated Rivalry,” comedian and actor Will Arnett, and Maggie Kang, the co-creator and director of “KPop Demon Hunters,” are some of the Canadian talent who are expected to attend the ceremonies on Sunday.

Ballerina featured in face of controversy

Celebrated ballerina Misty Copeland will be part of the performance of “I Lied to You,” a notable inclusion amid recent controversy around Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet’s comments on ballet and opera’s relevancy.

Edwards believes that won’t hurt Chalamet, who’s nominated for his role in “Marty Supreme,” in his efforts to win an Oscar.

“The category for best actor was already a tough one, and I don’t know that Timothy was in the lead,” he said. “So, yes, it is a story that’s worth talking about, because those statements were definitely offside, but I don’t think it will impact the results on Sunday at all.”

Possible ‘Bridesmaids’ reunion

With Maya Rudolph set to be a presenter, and the confirmed attendance of nominee Rose Byrne, some are wondering if there’s a possibility that the stars of the 2011 comedy “Bridesmaids” will come together for a reunion. The all-female comedy first debuted 15 years ago.

“I think we are going to get a Bridesmaid’s tribute,” Edwards said. “But what will it be? We’re not sure. So that’s why you have to tune in to see on Sunday. I guarantee it’s going to be great.”
