Vancouver Island’s rugged coastline and misty forests are about to take centre stage in a chilling new television thriller.
The first teaser for YAGA debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, offering an early look at the supernatural mystery filmed across Greater Victoria and Vancouver Island. Bell Media’s Crave has confirmed the eight-episode series will premiere in October for Canadian audiences, with AMC+ carrying the series in the United States.
For local viewers, the first look offers a chance to spot familiar scenery. The teaser features Vancouver Island locations, including Oak Bay’s historic Kiwanis Tea Room at Willows Beach, while the region’s coastline and forests help create the show’s eerie atmosphere.
The series reimagines the centuries-old Slavic legend of Baba Yaga as a modern mystery thriller set in a small coastal community. The story follows a private investigator searching for a missing young heir to a powerful fishing family, only to uncover a much darker web of secrets, hidden lives and ancient folklore.
YAGA stars Noah Reid, Clark Backo, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hudson Williams, alongside Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, Katharine Isabelle, Hiro Kanagawa and others.
Based on the award-winning stage play by Canadian writer and showrunner Kat Sandler, the series brings the supernatural elements of the original story into a contemporary Canadian setting.
Produced by Blink49 Studios and Front Street Pictures in partnership with Crave, YAGA was directed by David Frazee and Rachel Talalay. Carrie-Anne Moss also serves as an executive producer alongside Mackenzie Donaldson and Andrew Miller.
When YAGA premieres on Crave this October, Vancouver Island viewers will have the added thrill of seeing familiar local landscapes featured in a dark new mystery filmed right in their own backyard.
