A 19-year-old woman is dead and two other people are fighting for their lives in hospital after a collision between a dump truck and an Acura sedan in Pickering.
It happened on Bayly Street between Liverpool and Sandy Beach roads at around 5 p.m.
Neighbours reported hearing a loud crash following the collision and said the driver of the dump truck performed CPR on one of the victims.
The driver of the Acura – a teenage girl from Ajax – was declared dead, Durham Regional Police said.
A male passenger from the vehicle was airlifted to hospital, while a female passenger was transported to hospital via land ambulance. Both were listed in critical condition, police said.
Images from the scene showed a crumpled vehicle with extensive damage and the dump truck still stopped a short distance away.
Neighbours said that the stretch of road has seen a number of collisions in recent years.
There is no word on the exact cause of the collision so far.
A stretch of the road remains closed as police investigate.
