One man is dead and a second is charged with first-degree murder after a shooting in Toronto’s west end Sunday night, police confirm.

The victim, identified by police as 35-year-old Quincy Martin Ramirez, died after he was shot twice at close range behind an apartment block at 295 Ossington Ave., just north of Dundas Street West.

The shooting occurred during a party in the backyard at about 7:45 p.m.

Police homicide squad Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux said the suspect lives in the building and was not happy to see Ramirez, an invited guest, at the barbecue.

After an argument, the suspect went into his apartment suite, returned to the backyard with a rifle and shot Ramirez in the stomach and chest in front of at least 10 people, Giroux told CP24 reporter Jackie Crandles.

Giroux said there was “bad blood” between the victim and suspect that dated back several years to when the suspect was hired by the victim to do some work.

Money was owed to the suspect after the job was completed, Giroux said Monday.

The pair later settled the dispute in small claims court with a judgment in favour of the suspect, but there was still resentment and bitterness between the two, Giroux said.

Shane Leslie, a man who lives near the homicide scene, said he was awakened by the sound of a gunshot, so he went outside to investigate.

“I came out my door and looked over my fence and saw somebody on the ground in the yard just south of us and somebody was screaming that he’d been shot, so I ran and gave CPR,” Leslie told CP24 at the scene.

Leslie performed CPR on the victim until paramedics arrived. He said he saw a man with a rifle at the scene.

Giroux said police recovered a .303-calibre bolt-action rifle after the shooting.

Meanwhile, 67-year-old Edwin Parkinson appeared in a Toronto courtroom Monday morning on a charge of first-degree murder.

During the brief appearance, Parkinson was remanded into custody and told to return to court May 31.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call police at 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 416-222-TIPS (8477).
