Police say a white 2008 Mercedes CLS sedan was heading southbound on McCowan Road near Big Red Avenue, north of Finch Avenue East, around 10:54 p.m. when its driver attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control.

The car slammed into a tree trunk and the driver and three other passengers, two women aged 21 and 25, and a 23-year-old man, were trapped.

Firefighters say they spent the next 30 minutes extricating the passengers from the car.

A family friend told CP24 the vehicle belonged to the driver's uncle and the four occupants were just heading home from a  gathering a short distance away from the collision scene.

The southbound lanes of McCowan Road reopened at about 6 a.m. Monday.
