The mother of a Guelph police officer who was killed in a two-vehicle crash says her daughter was an “amazing” person who was living her lifelong dream.

Const. Jennifer Kovach, 26, died after her police cruiser crossed the centre line and collided with an oncoming transit bus in Guelph early Thursday morning.

Kovach had been a police officer for four years.

“Jennifer was a truly amazing person who was living her lifelong dream of being a police officer,” her mother, Gloria Kovach, said in a written statement released Friday. “She was dedicated to serving her community.”

Gloria Kovach, a Guelph city councillor, said her daughter had a “vibrant zest for life” and a “gregarious” smile – qualities that were singled out by her police colleagues in their remarks Thursday.

“Jennifer was a wonderful daughter, sister, granddaughter, auntie and friend,” her mother said. “She is deeply loved and will be greatly missed.”

In her statement, Gloria Kovach thanked friends, the public, Guelph’s police officers and chief, police union, firefighters, paramedics, the transit bus driver, and the doctors and nurses who tried to save her daughter’s life.

“We remain grateful to all of you who have been a constant source of love and comfort to us all,” Gloria Kovach said.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and are looking at road and weather conditions as possible factors.

Kovach will receive a public funeral with police honours on March 21.
