Among the 151,000 names that grace the 2018 sunshine list is former Premier Kathleen Wynne’s chief of staff, who pocketed $553,000, 19 Toronto police constables who earned more than $200,000 and a U of T official whose pay packet approached a million dollars.

The annual public sector salary disclosure, or Sunshine List, lays out the names, titles and salaries of all provincial and municipal workers who earn more than $100,000.

The highest paid public servant in Ontario continues to be Ontario Power Generation CEO Jeffrey Lyash, who earned $1.7 million last year, a 12.3 per cent increase from 2017. He is leaving the job this week.

In Toronto, the University of Toronto’s Chief Investment Officer Daren M. Smith earned $989,000, a 5.6 per cent increase from 2017.

At the Toronto Police Service, Chief Mark Saunders got a two per cent raise in 2018, bringing his salary to $344,000.

But 19 uniformed constables at the service earned more than $200,000, with one earning $289,000, more than any of the deputy chiefs at the service.

Both the police union and Toronto police leadership had said last year that an increase in violent crime combined with a shrinking complement of officers meant that many officers would be working more overtime in 2018.

At Queen’s Park, former Premier Kathleen Wynne’s chief of staff, Andrew Bevan, earned a whopping $553,000 in 2018, despite losing his job by virtue of the June 2018 election result midway through the year.

Bevan earned $314,000 in 2017.

Doug Ford’s Chief of Staff, Dean French, earned $153,000 from June to Dec. 31.

The city’s recently dismissed CEO of Toronto Community Housing, Kathy Milsom, earned $345,000 in 2018.

Many public sector unions say the Sunshine List needs to be updated to keep pace with inflation since its start in 1996, as $100,000 then would be worth $150,397 in 2018dollars.

The Ford government says the growth in the number of names on the list is troubling.

“Between 2003 and 2018, average salaries of all employees in the public sector, including those making less than $100,000, increased by 48.1 per cent,”the government said in a statement.

The list grew by more than 19,000 names between 2017 and 2018.

The province says the average private sector worker in the province now earns one third less than the average public sector worker.
