The husband of formal mayoral candidate George Smitherman has been reported missing after he failed to return home Monday night.

Christopher Peloso, 39, was last seen leaving his home in the Davenport Road and Bathurst Street area at around 4 p.m. Monday.

Peloso was subsequently reported missing by his family early Tuesday morning.

Peloso's disappearance was then confirmed by Smitherman in a statement posted to Twitter late Tuesday afternoon.

Police say they are concerned for Peloso's safety due to an unspecified medical condition he suffers from.

"I regret to confirm that Christopher Peloso has been missing from our home for almost 24 hours," Smitherman wrote. "Michael, Kayla and myself, with the support of family and friends, are hopeful that our husband and father will be home safely soon.

Smitherman, who was Ontario’s first openly gay member of provincial parliament, wed Peloso in 2007 while serving as health minister. Smitherman later left provincial politics to run against Rob Ford for mayor.

Smitherman and Peloso have adopted two kids together, a boy and a girl.

Speaking with CP24Tuesday, Const. Victor Kwong said police do not know why Peloso disappeared but have no reason to suspect foul play.

"We don’t know the reason why he hasn’t responded to his calls or hasn’t gone back home and we don’t know what problems he might have, so if he is out there listening we just want him to give his family a call or police a call so we can get him whatever help he might need," Kwong said.

Peloso is described as white, about five-foot-eight, 150 lbs., with brown eyes and short brown hair. He was last seen wearing a dark-blue jacket with a hood, tan-coloured cargo shorts and blue flip-flops.
