Utility companies in the GTA are investigating after residents across the region reported experiencing a strange flicker in the power supply Monday evening.

“We have crews out investigating right now,” Daffyd Roderick of Hydro One told CP24. “Shortly before 9:30 tonight we had an event in the transmission system where we had a drop in voltage and that’s what people noticed with the flickering right then.”

People quickly took to social media to report the odd occurrence, with people in Toronto, Richmond Hill, Burlington, Mississauga and as far away as Ottawa saying they experienced the flicker.

“What happened to the lights- why did we have a widespread flicker across the province?” asked Twitter user @JBersinic.

Another user, @ramniiks, said “It’s getting creepy.”

Around 10:20 p.m., Toronto Hydro said some 5,000 customers were without power in the Dufferin Street and St. Clair Avenue area due to downed power wires.

Smaller power outages were also reported in other areas around the GTA.

However Roderick said he wasn’t sure if the outages were related to the flickering situation.
