A 70-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of a  woman outside a Toronto community centre Wednesday.

Police say the victim, 65-year-old Xian Xu Liu, was walking in a park near the Wallace-Emerson Community Centre, near Dufferin and Dupont streets, at around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when she was approached by a man.

Investigators say the pair engaged in conversation for several minutes before the suspect assaulted Liu, causing her to collapse.

When paramedics arrived, they found the woman suffering from serious facial trauma. Attempts to resuscitate Liu were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

After receiving assistance from members of the community, investigators were able to identify the suspect.

Shou Quan Chen, 70, of Toronto, has been charged with second-degree murder in the woman’s death.

He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall, on Friday at 9 a.m.
