A 45-year-old man has died after the car he was driving collided with a crowded city bus in Mississauga Tuesday evening.

It happened near Derry Road and Tomken Road at around 6:10 p.m.

Peel Regional Police said the car slammed into the back of a stopped Mississauga transit bus.

The driver was subsequently pronounced dead.

The male driver of the bus was taken to hospital to be checked over for minor injuries.

“Unfortunately the driver succumbed to his injuries and as a result of that our Major Collision Bureau is now investigating the scene,” Const. Bancroft Wright told CP24 at the scene.

Wright said there were between 25 and 30 passengers on the bus at the time of the collision.

“To my knowledge there were no other injuries sustained,” he said.

It’s not yet clear what caused the crash.

“It’s too early to say,” Wright said. “That’s going to be the work of the major collision officers. Road conditions as you can see – they’re dry, there wasn’t any rain or snow. Whether or not speed was a factor – that’s yet to be determined from the measurements of the MCB officers.”

Wright said police are speaking with witnesses and are looking for any dashboard camera footage from vehicles that were in the area around the time of the crash.

“We’re asking for anyone that was in the vicinity at the time to contact Peel Regional Police,” Wright said.

Roads were closed in the area for several hours as police investigated the deadly collision.
