A 22-year-old man was fatally shot early Friday morning after breaking into a Mississauga residence and getting into a struggle with the homeowner, Peel police say.

Ibrahim Abukar is alleged to have broken into the semi-detached house on Corkstone Glade near Rathburn Road East and Dixie Road with two other men, at about 12:15 a.m.

Peel Regional Police were alerted when someone from within the home called 911 to report a break-and-enter in progress.

During that conversation, the 911 call-taker heard a gunshot over the phone.

When police arrived a short time later, they located the victim's body in a rental suite in the basement.

No charges have been laid.

"The deceased male was not a resident of the home and is alleged to have broken in with the two other males," a Peel police news release states. "They were confronted by the homeowner and a struggle ensued resulting in the death of the young male."

Witnesses reported seeing two males running from the scene, but police were unable to locate the pair during an immediate search that involved canine and tactical units.

A couple and their two children, including an infant, live on the main floor, and a woman rents the basement suite, said Mark, a co-worker and friend of the homeowner.

No one on the main floor was injured.

Meanwhile, police are still looking for suspects, and they are appealing for the public’s help to identify the home invaders.

The description of the suspects is vague.

At the scene, police spokesman Const. Thomas Ruttan said the males are black and they were wearing black clothing.
