Man killed in courthouse shooting identified

Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit has identified the man killed in a shootout with police at a Brampton courthouse Friday morning.
Charnjit Singh Bassi, 45, of Brampton, died after being shot during an altercation at the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse at 7755 Hunrontario St.
Peel police Const. Mike Klarenbeek, 53, was providing security at the courthouse when he was shot at around 11 a.m.
The 30-year-veteran of the force remains in hospital.
An interaction with police followed, during which Bassi was fatally shot.
There is currently no word on a possible motive behind the shooting.
The SIU has assigned 15 investigators and three forensic investigators to the case.

The SIU is an arm's-length agency that probes incidents or reports involving police where there has been a serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
