A 21-year-old Ajax man faces numerous charges after he allegedly stole a bottle of vodka from an LCBO in Whitby and assaulted several Durham Regional Police officers who attempted to place him under arrest on Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators say that at 2:45 p.m. on Wednesday, police were called to the LCBO on Thickson Road South for a report of a robbery.

A suspect allegedly took a bottle of vodka from the outlet and allegedly threatened to punch an employee who confronted him about it.

The suspect then got into a red Jeep parked outside and sped off.

Police officers caught up to the Jeep in the area of Cochrane Street and White Ash Drive, where they attempted to take the suspect into custody.

Police said that as they placed the suspect into the rear of a police cruiser, he allegedly kicked an officer in the face and then spit at a second officer who came to assist.

The first officer did not require medical assistance.

The stolen vodka bottle was found under the seat of a passenger in the Jeep.

A suspect identified as Nicholas Haines was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer, theft under $5,000, uttering threats, possession of stolen property and marijuana possession.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Two other occupants of the vehicle, a 21-year-old Barrie woman and a 21-year-old Whitby man, were also charged with theft and possession of stolen property.
