S&P/TSX composite up in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets also higher

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was higher in late-morning trading as strength in the telecom, financial and industrial sectors helped offset weakness in resource stocks, while U.S. stock markets also rose.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 50.36 points at 35,370.90.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 174.06 points at 52,682.33. The S&P 500 index was up 15.58 points at 7,559.17, while the Nasdaq composite was up 89.88 points at 26,196.89.

The Canadian dollar traded for 71.18 cents US compared with 71.09 cents US on Tuesday.

The August crude oil contract was down 65 cents US at US$78.69 per barrel.

The August gold contract was down US$17.00 at US$4,052.70 an ounce.
