Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. is reporting flat profits despite a big boost in revenue in its latest quarter.

The Calgary-based railway says net income reached $916 million in the quarter ended Sept. 30 versus $917 million in the same period a year earlier.

CPKC says third-quarter revenues rose 15 per cent year-over-year to $4.22 billion, bolstered by a major jump in grain and shipping container volumes.

It says diluted earnings per share climbed to $1.04 from $1.01 per share the year before.

The company says its bottom line was dented by fuel costs that surged 61 per cent year-over-year to $667 million, making it the largest expense outside of labour due to the soaring price of diesel.

In a release, CEO Keith Creel said the railway remains “in the early chapters of the CPKC story” and stressed longer-term opportunities.
