Toronto is getting a reprieve from the winter weather today, but a meteorologist with Environment Canada is warning that more bitter cold and snow could be on the way.

According to Geoff Coulson, the month of March will bring unseasonably cold temperatures to the weather-wary city with snow even possible later this week.

The news comes as residents recover from a February that saw 40 centimetres of snow dumped on the city with an average daytime low of -12.3 C recorded.

“February the big story was the cold, it was the coldest February in the Toronto area since 2007, and unfortunately more in the way of winter weather could be on the way,” Coulson told CP24 Monday morning as the temperature rose to a spring-like 6 C. “Any day that we get over the next few weeks like this get out and enjoy it because there will be plenty of other days that will be a lot colder.”

The temperature is expected to hover around 6 C for most of the day before rising to 8 C on Tuesday and then dropping back below freezing on Wednesday.

Though the first day of spring is now just 10 days away, Coulson told CP24 that long-term modules suggest it may be April until spring-like conditions arrive.

“Unfortunately the trend right now through the middle part of April is still going to be colder conditions,” he said. “Spring is basically going to be slow to come this year.”

Coulson added that it is not possible to predict what kind of summer the city will see at this point.
