WAWA, Ont. -- A New Democrat member of the Ontario legislature is calling on the province to come to the aid of a northern community affected by severe flooding.

Heavy rains caused creeks and rivers to overflow, washing out roads around Wawa, including a section of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The highway's southbound lanes are expected to be reopened by Monday, but the northbound lanes could stay closed for up to a week.

Wawa Mayor Linda Nowicki says her town is OK, but the nearby Michipicoten First Nation, as well as some other areas, have lost their only road links to the outside world.

MPP Michael Mantha represents the area. He says the provincial government should be helping repair not only the Trans-Canada, but all damaged roads and bridges.

The province says it's monitoring the situation and will provide assistance as needed.
