Durham police now say five people were injured during a shootout with two groups of men at an apartment building in Whitby Thursday afternoon.

Investigators released more details about the case Friday afternoon, including the ages of all victims.

In a press release, police said the shooting happened in a third-floor elevator at the White Oaks Court complex.  A 17-year-old man from Whitby was inside that elevator at the time but suffered minor injuries when he was hit by shrapnel.

A 19-year-old man who was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre shortly after the incident remains in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery.

Three other victims, identified as two 19-year-old men and a 17-year-old man, were all treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. One of the three has since been released from hospital.

Police say they are looking for three or four male suspects who they believe were involved in the targeted shooting. Authorities have not released a description of any of the suspects.

In the meantime, detectives remain on the scene looking to speak with witnesses. They are also looking at obtaining footage from surveillance cameras that are set up in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5400.
