An Oakville taxi driver has been charged with impaired driving after he was found asleep at the wheel after colliding with another vehicle in a parking lot on Wednesday night.

Police were called to the parking lot on Upper Middle Road near Eight Line shortly after 8 p.m., where they found a driver that appeared to be unconscious.

At the time the driver’s vehicle was still in drive and his blown out rear tires were causing sparks as they continued to spin, according to police.

Police say officers then broke the front passenger window of the vehicle in order to unlock the door and get the driver’s attention.

The driver was then awoken, assisted out of the vehicle and taken to hospital for precautionary measures.

Mohammed Tariq, 56, has been charged with driving while impaired and driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood.
