One person has been found dead and a Toronto firefighter has been taken to hospital with minor injuries after a two-alarm house fire in the city’s Oakwood-Vaughan neighborhood.

Firefighters were called to 497 Westmount Avenue, near Eglinton Avenue West and Dufferin Street, at around 1:45 p.m. for reports of a house fire.

Crews arrived to find heavy black smoke billowing from the home.

According to Toronto Fire Services, the fire started in the basement and then extended up to the first and second floors of the home.

Firefighters had difficulty putting out an active fire in the rear basement of the home, where they weren’t immediately able to search.

At around 3:50 p.m., Toronto police confirmed that one person was found deceased in the home.

“On behalf of Toronto Fire, I extend sincere condolences to the family, friends and all those impacted by the fatal fire on Westmount Avenue this afternoon,” Fire Chief Matthew Pegg wrote in a tweet.”

The person’s identity has not yet been released.

The deadly fire incident is the second to occur in Toronto today and the third today in the GTHA. Early this morning, another person was found dead following a house fire in the Willowdale area.  A house fire in Hamilton left another person dead.

“As you see that this is the second significant fire we've had this this day, unfortunately our second fatal fire this day,” Acting Toronto Fire Chief Jim Jessop said.  “And again, the women and men this afternoon looking at that damage did another great job getting in, knocking the fire down and keeping the fire contained to the house of origin and preventing it from spreading to the adjoining houses.”

Toronto Paramedic Services said firefighter who was transported to hospital sustained minor injuries.

The blaze also touched a garage and an adjacent home, though the extent of the damage there was not yet clear, Toronto Fire said.

It’s not yet clear how the fire started.

Pegg said the investigation into the origin, cause and circumstances will occur alongside an investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal.
