Ontario is reporting 491 new cases of COVID-19, the highest amount of new cases recorded since early May.
Sunday marks the fourth day in a row where the province is recording more than 400 new infections.
The new cases represent the highest amount of new infections since May 2 when 511 cases were recorded.
The province is also reporting two new deaths on Sunday, up from zero recorded a day earlier.
“Locally, there are 137 new cases in Toronto with 131 in Peel, 58 in Ottawa and 58 in York Region. 63% of today’s cases are in people under the age of 40,” Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted on Sunday.
Elsewhere in the GTA, 19 new cases were recorded in the Durham Region and 10 were recorded in Halton.
The province reported 435 new cases of the disease on Saturday and 409 new cases on both Friday and Thursday.
According to the province’s epidemiological summary, more than 42,500 tests were conducted by provincial labs within the last 24 hours.
More than 65,000 tests are currently under investigation by provincial health officials.
Of the new cases reported on Sunday, 236 are patients between the ages of 20 and 39, 118 patients are between 40 and 59 years old and 75 are 19 or younger.
Provincial health officials say there are 289 more resolved cases of the virus, bringing the total amount of active cases to 4,196.
To date, a total of 42,796 people recovered from the virus across the province and 2,839 people have died from the disease.
There are currently 112 people in hospital, up from 100 a day earlier. But, the ministry of health cautions that the number of hospitalized patients may be more due to a delay in reporting as approximately 35 hospitals did not submit data by September 25.
Of the patients in hospital, 28 are currently in intensive care and 16 are breathing with the help of a ventilator.
