The provincial government is reporting more than 2,300 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday and 52 more deaths.

Ontario reported 2,359 new COVID-19 cases, slightly down from the 2,662 cases logged on Friday.

On Thursday, the province reported 2,632 new cases and 2,655 infections on Wednesday.

The seven-day rolling average now stands at 2,603 compared to 3,218 a week ago.

According to the province’s latest epidemiological summary, 3,025 more people recovered from the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. There are now 24,545 active cases of the virus across Ontario.

In the past 24 hours, the province processed more than 63,400 lab-confirmed tests, down from 71,750 tests a day ago.

The province’s positivity rate is now 4.5 per cent, up from 3.3 per cent on Friday, according to the Ministry of Health.

Of the latest deaths, 25 were among long-term care home residents. Since the pandemic began in March, 3,375 long-term care home residents have died from the virus, representing 59 per cent of the province’s 5,753 virus-related fatalities.

There are currently 242 long-term care homes and 157 retirement homes with an active outbreak of COVID-19.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit reported Saturday that a teenager who worked in a long-term care home died after contracting COVID-19.

“We aren’t able to provide any additional information such as their exact age or the facility where they worked, as it could risk identifying the individual,” a spokesperson for the health unit said in an e-mail to CP24.

Most of the new cases continue to be throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

"Locally, there are 708 new cases in Toronto, 422 in Peel, 220 in York Region, 107 in Hamilton and 101 in Ottawa," Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted.

Toronto, Peel Region and York Region saw a day-over-day decrease in new infections, while cases in Hamilton and Ottawa increased compared to a day ago.

Elsewhere in the GTA, Halton recorded 77 new cases, down from 102 on Friday, while Durham Region logged 68 new cases, down from 80 a day ago.

Saturday marks the fourth straight day of declines in patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across the province. Provincial health officials said 1,501 people were hospitalized with the virus as of Saturday, compared to 1,512 a day ago.

Of those hospitalized, 395 are in intensive care units, compared to 383 on Friday and 299 are breathing with the help of a ventilator.

To date, there have been nearly 252,600 cases of COVID-19 across the province and more than 222,200 resolved cases since the virus first emerged a year ago.

Nearly 58,000 vaccinations completed

As of 8 p.m. on Friday, the province had administered more than 276,100 doses of both the Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines.

On Friday, over 11,100 doses were administered throughout the day.

Since mid-December, 57,907 people in Ontario have received the required two doses of the vaccine for full immunization.
