Cyclist struck in downtown core

A male cyclist was rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after he was struck by a taxi in the city’s Entertainment District Wednesday afternoon.

It happened near University Avenue and Richmond Street at around 2:40 p.m.

According to police, the 56-year-old victim was heading west on Richmond Street when he was struck by the northbound taxi in the intersection.

The cyclist was wearing a helmet at the time.

“It is looking more and more like the cyclist may have started early on the red signal and early reports are that the cab driver was clearing the light when the cyclists came across the path of the taxi driver,” Const. Hugh Smith told reporters at the scene. “The driver tried to avert the collision but unfortunately the proximity was too close.”

All northbound lanes of University Avenue are closed at Richmond Street and all westbound lanes of Richmond Street are closed east of University Avenue as police investigate the circumstances of the crash.

According to Smith, the closures could be in effect for a number of hours.
