Durham police say they are investigating their first homicide of the year after a 30-year-old man died of injuries sustained at a Whitby residence Saturday morning.

Police say the man was found with obvious signs of trauma around 7:20 a.m. at a basement apartment on McCullough Drive in the Brock Street and Highway 401 area. He was rushed to a Pickering hospital, but died of his injuries later in the morning.

Investigators said in a release Saturday afternoon they believe the man was involved in an altercation at the residence and that his injuries were not random.

Officers are currently canvassing the neighbourhood in the hopes that witnesses may have seen something that could help in the investigation.

No suspects have been named and no one has been arrested so far.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the homicide unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5400 or to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
