Toronto police officers opened fire after gunshots were fired by a suspect during an altercation in the city’s entertainment district early Sunday morning, a police spokesman says.

Police said no one was injured in the incident, which occurred near Peter and Adelaide streets.

The incident began when a suspect fired several gunshots at a vehicle in a parking lot, a source told CP24 reporter Jackie Crandles.

A man inside the vehicle wasn’t injured, the source said.

Several police officers were already in the area at the time as part of their usual presence in the entertainment district.

At some point as police responded, officers discharged their firearms, and no one was struck or injured, police told CP24.

The exact circumstances of the incident are not clear, as police did not say what prompted the officers to shoot.

A woman who was in the area said she heard six gunshots, and then police officers ran by and told people on the street to find a place of safety.

The woman said she heard additional gunshots fired after that.

She commended the officers, saying they responded quickly and took control of the situation.

A 24-year-old male suspect was arrested and is facing firearms-related offences, police said.
