Police have released surveillance camera footage showing a person of interest wanted in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Tyson Bailey.

Bailey, a star football player at Central Technical School, was shot dead inside the stairwell of a Regent Park apartment building in January.

Police have previously said that they believe Bailey was targeted.

“The video shows Tyson entering the front door along with a male that we know and have spoken with but there is also a third male following the two who appears to be with this person that is friends with Tyson,” Det. Sgt Justin Vander Heyden told reporters Thursday afternoon. “We are appealing to the media now to see if we can identify who this person might be and find out whether or not that person is involved in Tyson’s death.”

Officers canvass building

Investigators are currently canvassing the building at 605 Whiteside Place, where Bailey was killed.

They will be going door-to-door from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. and will question residents about their interactions with Bailey and whether they heard or saw anything on the day of his death.

According to Vander Heyden, phone records have shown that Bailey was familiar with the building and was there on the day of his death to meet a male he was “friendly” with.

“Criminal investigations are all about connections and I have established the connection between Tyson and this building,” Vander Heyden told reporters. “What I need to know is the connection between the shooter and this building. I am confident there is a connection and the answer lies in the building.”

Police were called to the building after residents reported hearing gunshots at around 2 p.m. on Jan. 18.

Upon arrival, officers made a perimeter around the building and conducted an exhaustive search inside.

Speaking with reporters Thursday, Vander Heyden said that after reviewing surveillance camera footage he is confident that the shooter was inside at the time.

“I don’t have a suspect specifically in mind, but I can say that they were here when the police arrived and they were likely here when the officers canvassed the building that night,” he said. “Whether they were being harboured by someone who lived in the building or actually lived here themselves is still to be determined.”
