Police say that they are treating the death of a 21-year-old woman who was pulled from the mouth of the Credit River in Mississauga as suspicious.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the Lakeshore and Stavebank roads area in Port Credit at around 10:50 p.m. on Saturday after a man who was with the woman called 911 to report that she had ended up in the water.
The woman was eventually pulled from the water after about 45 minutes but did not have vital signs. She was rushed to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
“At this time we have interviewed the gentleman who contacted 911 in regards to this incident and we are back in the area with our marine unit as well as our dive team just searching for any potential evidence that may still be there,” Const. Akhil Mooken told CP24 on Sunday morning. “We are still trying to piece together what exactly happened to end up with the woman in the water.”
Mooken said that police will consider “all factors” as they investigate how the woman ended up in the water, including whether there may have been ice that she could have slipped on.
He said that one of the challenges police faced on Saturday night was the poor lighting in the area where the woman went into the water at the end of a pier.
“There is a lot more investigation to be done and hopefully we will have some answers soon,” he said.
