WAWA, Ont. - Police say motorists should expect delays near the northern Ontario town of Wawa as members of a local First Nation stage an Idle No More protest.
Provincial police say Highway 101 and Highway 17 may be subject to traffic delays as a result of the scheduled protest.
A Facebook page for the growing Idle No More movement says some Michipicoten First Nation members plan a peaceful four-hour demonstration on Saturday afternoon at the point south of Wawa where the two highways meet.
Police say they respect the rights of demonstrators to hold a peaceful protest and will be focused on maintaining public safety during the march.
A protest organizer says on Facebook the rally is being held in support of hunger-striking Attawapiskat First Nation Chief Theresa Spence, and over concerns about access to lakes on Crown land in the province's north.
Police say they are hopeful protest organizers will ensure the demonstration does not interfere with emergency vehicle traffic on the highways.
