Mayor Rob Ford is taking a break from Toronto, though apparently not to get away from the spotlight.

Ford touched down in Los Angeles Saturday evening with his brothers and several members of his staff and was greeted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.

Dressed as a chauffeur and holding a sign that read ‘Ford,’ Kimmel greeted the mayor as he entered the baggage area at the airport.

“Let me take that for you – I’m your driver,” Kimmel told the mayor as the two shook hands.

Ford said he had come to Los Angeles after accepting an invitation from Kimmel to appear on the comedian’s show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, this coming Monday.

“He personally called me and that’s why,” Ford said when asked why he’d finally decided to appear on the show. “And I appreciate that, so thank you very much,” he said to Kimmel.

“Great to have you here – it’s gonna be fun,” Kimmel replied.

Ford is also planning on going to the Academy Awards on Sunday, he told the Toronto Sun in an interview published Saturday.

“I am going to the Oscars. It’s going to be fun,” Ford told the paper.

However none of the parties have since confirmed that there is actually a plan for the mayor to go.

A member of Ford’s staff said Saturday evening that the mayor would attend the Oscars Sunday as Kimmel’s guest, but quickly retracted the comments and said the plans were not confirmed.

When asked by eTalk’s Tanya Kim whether Kimmel would be taking Ford to the Oscars as his ‘plus one,’ the comedian responded with laughter and said “absolutely – wherever he wants to go.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if he was joking.

“I don’t know. We’ll see,” Ford said when asked whether he’d be walking the red carpet.

The mayor reportedly had no trouble crossing the U.S. border, despite having admitted to smoking crack cocaine on at least one occasion.

Pictures posted to Twitter Saturday evening showed the mayor and his brothers Doug and Randy together with Kimmel at Los Angeles International Airport.

Earlier Saturday, Kimmel retweeted a photo posted to the mayor’s Twitter account of Ford waiting for a connecting flight at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, presumably on his way to Los Angeles.

The Jimmy Kimmel Live website does not list Ford as a guest for Monday, though it does list Muppets character The Great Gonzo and musical guest Fitz & The Tantrums.

Earlier this week, Ford hinted in a podcast with his brother Doug that he might make an appearance on one of the late night shows.

Ford has been fodder for late night funny-men on U.S. television since he made international headlines last year for being involved in a crack cocaine scandal.

Comedians from David Letterman to Jay Leno to Kimmel have since lampooned the mayor for his crack admission, as well as comments he’s made about oral sex and occasional videos and photos that have surfaced, showing him intoxicated and sometimes ranting.
