When John Tory walked into his new office at city hall on Monday, there was a little surprise waiting for him from outgoing mayor Rob Ford.

Sitting on Tory’s desk was a framed vintage TTC poster that read “The subway is the best way ... today, everyday.”

The poster was signed, “John, Best wishes! Rob Ford.”

“There it was on my desk, which was nice,” Tory told reporters outside his office while holding up the framed poster.

When asked if he plans to keep the poster, Tory replied, “Of course I’m going to keep it.”

Tory said he looks forward to seeing Ford tomorrow at city hall when the new council takes part in a public ceremony in honour of their first official meeting. Tory will be presented with the mayor’s chain of office during the special event.

“I think we all hope that he is there tomorrow and in good enough health to be there and for many, many days thereafter at our debates.”

Ford, who will return to city hall as a councillor for Ward 2 this term, finished his latest round of chemotherapy on Friday. Doug Ford previously told CP24 that his brother may be required to undergo radiation and surgery as part of his treatment for liposarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer.
