After four tumultuous years, Rob Ford’s mayoral term has come to an end.

Ford was required to vacate the mayor’s office by midnight, when John Tory’s term technically began.

Ford, who finished his latest round of chemotherapy Friday, had no public appearances scheduled Sunday but did release a statement on Sunday night.

"I wish to thank the people of Toronto for their support over the last 4 years as their Mayor, and their ongoing support as I will continue to represent its citizens as a Councillor for Ward 2," the outgoing mayor's statement read.

"Just four short years ago, City Hall was filled with examples of extravagance, wastefulness, and a general disrespect for both the taxpayers and their hard earned dollars. My administration brought that to an end."

While much of Rob Ford’s term was dominated by scandals involving drugs, alcohol and controversial behaviour, he has been credited with finding savings at city hall, including negotiating the outsourcing of garbage in the city’s west end. Ford has also touted accomplishments including eliminating the vehicle registration tax and keeping property taxes low.

In the statement, Ford said he will "continue to look out for the people of Toronto," as a member of city council.

"I will make sure that people can see, through a transparent and accountable government, where every one of their hard earned tax dollars is spent. I we continue to find more efficiencies at City Hall, to keep even more of your money in your own pocket, while maintaining our level of customer service excellence," he said in the statement.

"Thank you again for the privilege of representing you as Mayor these past four years, and to continue to do so for the next four."

While speaking to CP24 last week, Doug Ford said his brother will likely be required to undergo radiation and surgery as part of his treatment for liposarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer.

Mayor-elect John Tory and the new council will be officially sworn in Tuesday, when they will also sit for the first council meeting of the term.
