Canada's main stock index was up in late-morning trading, helped by gains in the base metal and technology sectors, while U.S. stock markets climbed higher.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 43.53 points at 19,592.04.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 100.72 points at 30,465.55. The S&P 500 index was up 28.36 points at 3,763.84, while the Nasdaq composite was up 160.89 points at 10,989.24.

The Canadian dollar traded for 77.17 cents US compared with 77.28 cents US on Tuesday.

The July crude contract was down US$1.07 at US$117.86 per barrel and the July natural gas contract was up 38 cents at US$7.57 per mmBTU.

The August gold contract was up US$9.10 at US$1,822.60 an ounce and the July copper contract was up less than a penny at US$4.16 a pound.
