Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating an incident that occurred at Sunnybrook hospital early Thursday morning.

According to the SIU, police were called in to assist hospital employees after they were involved in an “interaction” with a 42-year-old male patient shortly after midnight.

At some point, a window was broken and the man was injured.

A witness said the man went through the broken window and was hanging from a ledge before he was pulled back into the fifth-floor room.

As of Thursday morning, the man is in a critical care unit, the SIU said.

According to the police watchdog, the chain of events, and the nature and cause of the man’s injuries are still under investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the SIU at 416-622-2293 or 1-800-787-8529 ext. 2293.

The SIU gets involved when police officers are involved in incidents where someone has been seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault.
