The Edmonton Elks are remembering owner Larry Thompson after he died from complications following surgery.
A press release sent out by the football club said Thompson was a pillar in the franchise.
“Owning the Double E was the realization of a life-long goal for Thomspon, who grew up a passionate supporter of the club since attending his first game in 1972,” said the club. “Alongside his family, they are responsible for saving and stabilizing the franchise he held dear for over 50 years.
“Larry’s legacy within the organization is immeasurable.”
Thompson became the first private owner of the Elks in 2024 after he sold his Spruce Grove-based construction company in 2023.
Thompson’s wife, Deb, said her family is devastated by the loss of their anchor.

“Larry was a legend and our family will continue his legacy far beyond our lifetimes,” she said. “Owning EE was a life-long dream, my only regret is he isn’t here to enjoy it.”
The ownership of the franchise will remain with Deb.
Elks president and CEO Chris Morris said Thompson’s impact on him and the club was profound.
“Larry’s toughness and direct nature were matched only by his genuine care for every person connected to the Double E,” he said. “He led with clarity, courage and an unwavering belief in people.
“We will do everything in our power to carry his example with us as we rebuild the franchise in his honour.”
