‘We showed up’: Fans react to Blue Jays’ 10-1 win over the Yankees in Game 1 of ALDS

The Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Yankees 10-1 in Game 1 of their American League Division Series.

Toronto led early thanks to solo home runs by Vladimir Guerrero and Alejandro Kirk. The Blue Jays added four more runs each in the seventh and eighth innings.

The two teams will be back at the Rogers Centre on Sunday for Game 2. Trey Yesavage will be on the mound for Toronto. The first pitch is at 4:08 p.m.

Here are some of the highlights of Game 1.

8:20 p.m. - Blue Jays players on win

8 p.m. - ‘We played really well,’ Blue Jays manager says

During his postgame news conference, Blue Jays manager John Schneider said the win was a nice way to start the series.

“That game kind of sums up our season right there,” said Schneider, referring to the contributions from the top to the bottom of the lineup.

“That was kind of the blueprint of what we have done all year.”

Schneider said the win gives them a boost for Sunday’s Game 2.

“We played really well today. I think when you play your game, it just gives you confidence to kind of roll over into the next day. Every game is different. Every starting pitcher is a different assignment and different tasks to tackle, but it gives you a little bit of a nice little momentum going into tomorrow,” he said.

7:36 p.m. – Blue Jays fans react to win

CP24’s Phil Perkins spoke to elated fans after the win. One fan said the game was “unbelievable.”

“I cannot believe we started off the series with a 10-1 win. It was incredible,” the fan said.

“We showed up. The crowd was electric. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome.”

Another person, who described herself as a non-baseball fan, said the game was amazing and that she had the best time.

“I’m all about hockey, but this is absolutely amazing. That’s like the way the Toronto Maple Leafs fans have to bring it,” a third fan said. “It was fabulous.”

FINAL SCORE: Blue Jays 10, Yankees 1

The Blue Jays take Game 1 of the ALDS with a 10-1 victory over the Yankees.

Toronto scored a total of eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings to secure the win.

7:05 p.m. - Another 4-run inning

Andres Gimenez scores the Blue Jays’s fourth run in the bottom of the eighth inning after Lukes hits a single to centre field.

6:56 p.m. - Gimenez doubles, Clement hits sac fly

With runners on first and third, Andres Gimenez doubles to left field, driving in Daulton Varsho.

Ernie Clement then hits a sacrifice fly to centre field and Myles Straw scores. Blue Jays up 9-1.

6:50 p.m. - 2nd home run for Kirk

Alejandro Kirk hits his second home run of the game in the bottom of the 8th inning to give the Blue Jays a 7-1 lead against the Yankees.

6:33 p.m. - Guerrero sac fly cashes in another run

George Springer scores the Blue Jays’ sixth run after Vladimir Guerrero hit a sacrifice fly to centre field.

6:30 p.m. - Lukes drives home 2 runs

Nathan Lukes, with the bases loaded, hits a double in the right field, driving in two runs. The Blue Jays lead 5-1.

6:21 p.m. - Gimenez drives a run

With runners on first and third bases and nobody out, Andres Gimenez singles to right field to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead.

5:51 p.m. - Varland gets third out

Varland strikes out Giancarlo Stanton and preserves the Jays’ one-run lead.

5:48 p.m. - Gausman done, Varland in

After getting the second out and with the bases still loaded, Gausman is done for the day. Louis Varland replaces him.

5:46 p.m. - Yankees on board

With the bases loaded, Gausman walks Cody Bellinger in the top of the 6th inning and the Yankees cut the lead 2-1.

5:32 p.m. - Jays defence shines

Nathan Lukes and Daulton Varsho made incredible back-to-back catches to end the top of the 5th inning.

Earlier, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also made a diving catch before getting to his feet to complete a double play in the top of the second inning.

5:25 p.m. - Gausman dealing

After five innings, Kevin Gausman has only given two hits to the Yankees on 50 pitches as the Blue Jays continue to lead 2-0.

5 p.m. - Yankees starting pitcher done after 2 2/3 innings

After giving up two solo home runs, Luis Gil, the Yankees’ starting pitcher, has been pulled out of the game.

He pitched 2.2 innings and gave up four hits and two runs.

4:36 p.m. - Kirk hits home run

Alejandro Kirk opens the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to give Toronto a 2-0 lead.

4:22 p.m. - Vladdy opens scoring with HR

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. opens the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a home run. 1-0 Blue Jays.

4:10 p.m. – Gausman gets first out

Kevin Gausman has taken the mound and Trent Fielder grounds out for the first out of Game 1 of the ALDS.

4 p.m. - Martin throws ceremonial first pitch

Former Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin throws the ceremonial first pitch before the game. The Canadian was part of the Blue Jays team from 2015 to 2018.

3:48 p.m. – pre-game ceremonies underway

Fans at the Rogers Centre cheer as Blue Jays players and support staff are introduced during pre-game ceremonies. First pitch is at 4:08 p.m.

3:24 p.m. - Fan says 2025 roster more complete compared to 2015 team

One Blue Jays fan who is a season ticket holder says the 2025 team is “completely different” from the one in 2015, the last time Toronto won the AL East Division.

“That team was all about bashing balls and home runs. These guys are more of a complete roster. Everybody has to do their part and everybody has been. That’s what’s made them kind of fun and exciting,” she tells CP24’s Phil Perkins.

She hopes that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will get hot offensively during the series.

“Vladdy’s hopefully going to put the team on his back and help carry them along with George (Springer),” she says.

With Bo Bichette out over the last couple weeks it’s no secret among fans and players his presence has been missed.

However, George Springer says his team has adopted a “next man up” mentality and will have to lean on it for whatever happens in the post-seaspostseasonon.

12:08 p.m. - ‘Tough conversations’ with Scherzer and Bassitt, says Schneider

“Obviously tough decisions... for Max especially, who has been on the biggest stage the game has to offer (and) Chri,s who is a veteran guy himself,” Schneider said.

“With Max, we were communicating all week, we weren’t sure if it was going to be New York or Boston... it probably would have been a different outcome if it was Boston, to be honest,” he added.

“They are tough conversations, but you’re trying to find the best lanes for guys.”

12:05 p.m. - Trey Yesavage to start Game 2, Shane Bieber to start Game 3

Speaking to reporters ahead of Game 1, Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider says Trey Yesavage will start Sunday afternoon for Game 2 and Shane Bieber will start Game 3.

When asked about the lineup, Schneider explained he’s trying to “maximize as many bullpen arms” as he can.

“We’re trying to keep guys pitching where we want them to be pitching. I think it’s nice to have Trey pitch at home and have a veteran guy on the road,” he said, adding that they “see where Game 4 leads.”

10:15 a.m. - Jays announce dome will be open

In a post to social media, the Jays confirm that this afternoon’s game will have an open roof.

10:03 a.m. - Roster update: No Bo Bichette, Max Scherzer, Chris Bassitt
