Team Canada’s look at the opening ceremonies of the Milano-Cortina Olympics is sparking a strong reaction online—with one TikToker’s bewildered take racking up nearly one million views over the weekend.
As has been the case since 2021, this year’s Team Canada’s kits were designed by Vancouver-based Lululemon.
When the Canadian Olympic Committee offered its first look at the designs last year, it predicted the team would make a “memorable entrance” at the Games.
And one piece from the collection was described as the “statement item.” That item is the Team Canada Convertible Quilted Wrap Vest.
“(It) can be worn as a vest, scarf, or packed up as a pillow. The large maple leaf design on the front will provide instant global recognition as Team Canada proudly marches into Milano San Siro Olympic Stadium,” the committee posted on its website.
The item retails for $198 and was listed as sold out on Lululemon’s website on Sunday.
One of the people who evidently snapped one up before it sold out was Ryan Massel, a lifestyle blogger and content creator who posted his reaction on TikTok.
“Somebody needs to help me. What is this?!” he asked. “What am I doing. Oh my God. I’m going to scream.”
While the Lululemon website touts the piece’s versatility, that quality seemed to be the one most confounding to Massel.
“It makes no goddamn sense,” he said.
With a clip at the front, cinching toggles on the back, and only one pocket, Massel tries it on in multiple configurations asking if it’s a poncho, a scarf, or a hood—coming to the conclusion that he has no idea what it is.
“I’m crashing out,” he said, ending the video.
B.C.’s Juliette Pelchat, who will represent Canada in snowboarding at this year’s Games, also posted a TikTok featuring the garment as her outfit of the day.
The reaction in the comments was mixed. While some said they loved it, others compared it to a sleeping bag or a tent.
Lululemon is contracted to dress Canada’s Olympic team through the 2028 games in L.A.
