The White House and U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media to gloat and troll Canada following the men’s gold medal Olympic hockey game.
Just after the U.S.’s 2-1 overtime victory over Canada on Sunday, the White House’s official X account posted an image of a bald eagle standing triumphantly with its talons digging into a Canada goose that is lying helplessly on the ice. The birds are both symbols of their countries.

Early Monday morning, Trump followed up with a video post on his Truth Social platform. The minute-long AI-generated clip shows Trump on the ice facing off against Team Canada, scoring goals and pummelling Canadian players while wearing a navy suit and his signature red tie.
Both posts were made in response to former prime minister Justin Trudeau. Following Trump’s annexation threats and Canada’s victory over the U.S. in the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament last year, Trudeau took to X in February 2025 to say, “You can’t take our country – and you can’t take our game.”

Despite the official trolling and gloating south of the border, Canada still has the world’s most successful men’s international ice hockey team. Canadian men have won an unparalleled nine Olympic hockey gold medals since 1920, with the most recent coming at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, where the U.S. lost the bronze medal match to Finland. Prior to this year’s winter games, 2014 was also the last time NHL players participated in the Olympics.
Sunday’s victory was only the third gold medal for the U.S. men’s national hockey team, and their first Olympic victory since the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The U.S. men’s team last earned a medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where they were awarded silver after falling to Canada in overtime during the gold medal match.
Before being dissolved in 1991, the Soviet Union won seven Olympic men’s hockey gold medals, putting the team in second place and ahead of the U.S. in terms of all-time Olympic hockey victories. Athletes from the former Soviet Union and Russia also earned Olympic gold in 1992 and 2018.

Despite losing to the U.S. this year, the Canadian women’s national hockey team has also netted the most gold medals at the Olympics with five since women’s hockey was introduced at the 1998 winter games in Nagano, Japan. With their third ever gold medal this year, the U.S. is the only other country to win the top prize in women’s Olympic hockey.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Mark Carney was more restrained than his American counterpart.
“Congratulations on a hard-fought and well-earned silver,” Carney wrote. “You made your country proud.”
Congratulations on a hard-fought and well-earned silver, @TeamCanada.
