The Toronto Blue Jays bolstered their bullpen with the addition of Paul Sewald off waivers, the team confirmed on Wednesday.
Sewald, 36, was designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this week.
A 10-year veteran, Sewald appeared in 45 contests for the Diamondbacks this season. He was 2-5 with a 6.23 earned run average and 1.103 WHIP over 39.0 innings pitched. Sewald struck out 44 batters and walked nine, recording 24 saves.
A native of Las Vegas, Sewald has made 426 appearances for the D-Backs, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Guardians, Seattle Mariners and New York Mets. For his career, he’s 23-31 with a 4.30 ERA and 1.145 WHIP over 435.0 innings pitched. Sewald has notched 110 career saves.
The team also announced that injured righty Jake Bloss had been recalled to the big league roster and was immediately placed on the 60-day injured list.
The Blue Jays (58-63) currently sit 2.5 games back of the final American League wild-card spot. They continue a four-game set with the Boston Red Sox (64-55) later on Wednesday at Rogers Centre.
