Three people are dead and a fourth person is in hospital following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 404 north of Stouffville Road.

It happened in the northbound lanes of the highway shortly before 5 p.m.

According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, the vehicles - a Ford Fusion and a Toyota Camry - collided head on after the Fusion crossed the median from the highway’s southbound lanes.

“It’s a massive collision scene,” he said. “The damage on the vehicles is incredible.”

The circumstances that caused the car to cross the median were not immediately clear.

“That’s one of the big questions we want to have answered right now,” Schmidt said. “We’ll be speaking to witnesses, and we’re appealing for any other witnesses that may have seen this vehicle prior to the collision.”

The three people killed in the crash - two men, and a woman - were all travelling in the Camry, Schmidt said. The male patient currently in hospital was in the other vehicle.

Information on the ages of those involved in the crash was not immediately provided by police.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed at Elgin Mills Road, and one southbound lane was closed at Stouffville Road as police investigated.

The highway was reopened at around 10 p.m.
