Three people were taken to hospital after the Honda Accord they were travelling in left the roadway and struck a tree in Vaughan Sunday morning.

It happened shortly before 2:30 a.m. on King Vaughan Road between Dufferin and Keele Streets.

Police say the 16-year-old driver of the eastbound car lost control after a grey BMW SUV passed by in the same direction approaching Dufferin Street.

Vaughan firefighters had to remove the three young men from the vehicle. All of them were then taken to hospital, one with serious injuries. None of the injuries are considered to be life threatening.

York Regional Police have shut down King Vaughan Road between Dufferin and Keele streets as they investigate.

They are appealing for the driver of the SUV or any other witnesses to come forward with information by calling the Collision Reconstruction Unit at (905) 764-1300 ext. 7704.
